Overview

Hasshaku-sama refers to a series of phenomena where boys, usually those who have reached puberty, encounter an abnormally tall woman and subsequently disappear between June and October. The woman encountered is referred to as Hasshaku-sama. The current classification by the Japan Supernatural Research Institute is “Unconfirmed Yokai C-I.” It is not registered with the WSO.

Phenomenon

Based on common elements in reported cases, this phenomenon is believed to have three stages: “sighting,” “encounter,” and “disappearance.”

Sighting

It is sighted across various rural areas nationwide, day or night. As the name(8 shaku) suggests, it is about 240 cm tall and wears a white robe. Despite its height, its head is roughly the size of a human’s, and it has long limbs. It is also said to have very large breasts that stimulate ejaculation in its targets. In recent years, multiple reports have confirmed that it wears a large straw hat.

At this time, it emits a low, indescribable sound that combines “po,” “bo,” and “mo.”

Almost everyone present does not notice it, but those who do become its targets. Even if noticed, its abnormal height often does not seem strange due to its hypnotic abilities.

Encounter

On the night of the sighting, it visits. It can mimic the voices of the target’s acquaintances, coaxing or persistently threatening them into sexual acts. This is called an encounter.

Reports include forced intercourse, masturbation, oral sex, forced masturbation, prostate stimulation, near-death orgasms, testicular compression, and insertion of foreign objects.

No physical injuries other than self-inflicted wounds by the victims have been reported, and there are no reports of property damage.

Disappearance

Those who encounter it disappear within a few days to a few weeks. Most cases occur within 1 to 3 days, with the longest recorded case being 20 days. Some disappear on the same day they leave a witness statement. No one has been found after disappearing, and no bodies have been discovered.

Victims’ bodily fluids, such as semen, may be found at the scene, but no other traces are left.

While the presence of bodily fluids at the scene can be a criterion for determining its involvement, it is not considered evidence. A case is only recognized as being captivated by it if the victim reported the encounter before disappearing and remains missing for over five years.

There are cases of unexplained disappearances with bodily fluids left at the scene, but it is impossible to prove whether these are due to it, and they are recorded as unexplained disappearances “spirited-away”.

Keeping the victim under constant surveillance can delay the disappearance after an encounter. However, if left alone even for a moment, the victim may disappear.

There is one case where the victim was placed under complete organizational surveillance to prevent disappearance, but the victim fell into a state of confusion after four days, self-harming their penis and testicles. The self-harm was suppressed by removing the testicles, but the victim later developed epilepsy and speech disorders and disappeared from the psychiatric hospital they were transferred to.

There is also a case where the victim fled abroad with their family after the first encounter but disappeared locally.

Countermeasures

The following measures are based on reported cases and folklore. Note that their authenticity is unverified, and they are only effective before the first encounter. No countermeasures have been found for after the encounter.

Complete Indifference

It loses interest in those who show no concern. Even if targeted, consistent indifference can remove one from its target list. Reported methods include:

Avoiding eye contact
Not responding
Not touching it
Not thinking about it (not recalling its appearance)

Sealed Room

Before the encounter, it cannot enter sealed rooms. There must be no gaps larger than 3 cm.

Magic and Talismans

Like other evil spirits, magic and talismans can be effective in avoiding encounters with it.

Origin and Classification

Similar legends and folklore exist nationwide, not limited to specific regions. While there are significant differences in appearance reported over time, regional differences are relatively small.

Although the legend is deeply rooted in local folklore, there are few written records, making the start of the phenomenon unclear.

The oldest record dates back to 1702, describing a woman in a white robe about 3 meters tall. However, due to the lack of information, it is unclear if this was Hasshaku-sama.

Despite the inclusion of supernatural pornography, there are still no photographic records, and it remains classified as an “Unconfirmed Yokai.”

The origin and classification of Hasshaku-sama are subjects of ongoing debate among supernatural archaeologists, theologians, and biologists.

Common Theories

Foreign Origin Theory

This theory suggests that a tall foreigner who drifted to ancient or medieval Japan was mistaken for a yokai, and the rumors evolved into the current phenomenon.

Tall women were extremely rare at the time, and repeated exaggerations led to the height of eight shaku (about 240 cm).

Records of foreigners drifting ashore exist nationwide, consistent with the scattered legends of Hasshaku-sama.

However, the low recognition of this phenomenon, despite the widespread legends, raises doubts about its existence since the Middle Ages. Some argue that the trauma of sexual abuse by a tall foreigner left a strong impression, preserving the phenomenon, which aligns with its behavior.

Urban Legend Theory

This theory suggests that the phenomenon originated from an urban legend spread with some intent in modern times. While this is a widely supported theory, the lack of records contradicts the tendency of popular urban legends to be documented.

New Theories

Supernatural Entity Theory

Recently, a theory has emerged that Hasshaku-sama is a supernatural entity with a physical form, not just a yokai.

One of the most prominent theories is the “Succubus Variant Theory,” which suggests that Hasshaku-sama is a unique variant of a succubus.

The basis for this theory includes:

Stimulating ejaculation, similar to a succubus
Preference for young men, common among succubi
Sexual body shape similar to non-starving succubi
Complete human form
Encounters mainly at night
Consistent physical characteristics in reports, lacking the cognitive distortion typical of yokai
Western-style appearance despite being a Japanese phenomenon

Counterarguments include:

Reports of not absorbing semen, unlike succubi and their variants
No signs of malnutrition or dehydration in victims
No discovered bodies of victims
No reported shape-shifting abilities, common among succubi
Only observed in Japan (though some disappearances occurred abroad)
Can be repelled by indifference, unlike succubi who prey regardless of the target’s will

While this theory gained significant attention, the counterarguments are more convincing, and it has lost popularity. However, it has accelerated the view of Hasshaku-sama as more than just a yokai.

Other theories include it being a god, spirit, demon, or a human who became a demon, but these remain speculative due to the difficulty of proving its existence.

Challenges in Proving Existence

Several challenges exist in proving Hasshaku-sama as a supernatural entity.

First, most encounters involve minors, and bait investigations are not permitted for their protection. Adult male bait investigations have been conducted but have yielded no results.

Additionally, victims often develop PTSD from experiencing sexual abuse and near-death fear, making it difficult to obtain accurate testimonies. Victims also disappear before recovery, preventing information gathering.

Furthermore, capturing images or videos is feared to be considered supernatural pornography, deterring universities and research institutions from active investigation.

Threat Level

Reports of disappearances suspected to be caused by Hasshaku-sama are rare, with no confirmed cases in the past five years and only a few potential cases annually.

Despite the high number of summer spirited-away, the strict criteria for recognizing its involvement and the limited victim attributes result in a threat level of “C-I” (life-threatening/small-scale/low frequency/low recognition).

Critics argue this is an underestimation, given the mental damage to victims and their families, and the higher threat levels of other hidden gods and kidnapping demons.

If Hasshaku-sama is proven to be a supernatural entity, its threat level would be significantly reassessed due to its potential for deliberate, planned activities.

Secondary Damage

Due to the low number of cases, records of Hasshaku-sama’s occurrences were long kept confidential for victim protection. However, the enactment of the “Information Disclosure Act on Spirits and Monsters” has led to the public release of all confirmed cases.

While the act was intended to prevent the spread of damage, the disclosure of Hasshaku-sama’s regions and characteristics has led to a surge in illegal attempts to encounter it. Three illegal attempts have been prosecuted, and investigations are ongoing into the disappearances of eight males aged 10-22, suspected to be either its victims or human kidnappings for bait.

Social Aspect

Hasshaku-sama is classified as an unconfirmed yokai and is not registered with the WSO. While public awareness is low, it has gained a cult following among enthusiasts.

The common physical characteristics and traits in credible reports suggest that Hasshaku-sama is highly sexually attractive, contributing to its cult popularity.

In reality, almost all illegal attempts to encounter Hasshaku-sama are for the purpose of creating supernatural pornography.
